INVESTIGATION DRAFT

Name of the investigation
Rusting of iron.

Aim
To investigate the conditions necessary for iron to rust.

Predictions
I predict that the nails in boiled water and in calcium hydroxide would not rust and the other which is in distilled water would rust.

Apparatus
3 test tubes with caps
3 nails (should not have a sign of rusting)
Fresh water (distilled water)
Oil
Calcium hydroxide
Bunsen burner
Test tube keeper

Method
At first take 3 test tubes. Place them all in the test tube keeper. Take one test tube out of them. Put some calcium hydroxide inside the test tube. Then put a nail inside it. Put the cap of the test tube. Label the test tube as ‘’A’’ and place it back in the test tube keeper.

Take the second test tube. Pour some distilled water and the nail. The water level should be about half length of the nail. Put the cap of the test tube. Label it ‘’B’’ and place it back to the test tube keeper.

Take the third test tube. Pour some distilled water. The level of the water should cover the entire length of the nail. With the help of the Bunsen burner, boil the water in the test tube. Turn off the Bunsen burner when the water is boiled. Place the nail in the hot water. Pour some oil on top of water in the test tube. Label the test tube ‘’C’’ and place it back in the test tube keeper.
